The First-Generation Student Success Center is pleased to invite you to the inaugural Summer 2025 symposium on advancing strategies to promote First-Generation success at SSU.
This in-person day of presentations, workshops and roundtable discussions will offer dedicated time for faculty and staff to explore who first-gen Vikings are and how we serve them, both in and out of the classroom. 25 faculty and 25 staff spots are available for this event, breakfast/lunch included. Maria Dykema Erb, DU Newbury Center Director and First-Gen Scholar, will be the keynote speaker.
The day will begin at 8:30 am with a light breakfast, followed by the keynote speaker and workshop presentations. Participants will engage with staff and faculty colleagues to learn about first-generation student needs and strengths as we identify ways to strengthen our individual and community supports. Workshops will touch on practices and resources for faculty, coaching outside the classroom, and cultural wealth. A noon luncheon will follow, with poster displays on first-generation research and initiatives. The symposium will run until 3:00pm. Afternoon sessions will be be guided discussions that follow on the morning themes of coaching outside the classroom; transparency/accessibility in the classroom; and cultural wealth. The discussions will offer the opportunity to explore further best practices and provide your ideas and suggestions that could drive institutional readiness for our first-generation community. Help us become first-gen forward!
